Welcome to the first issue of Mobile Robot Brief, a free weekly, vendor-neutral read on AMRs and AGVs for the people who run and automate warehouses, plants and logistics networks. Each week: the deployments, deals, launches and numbers that matter, with a short note on what they mean on the floor.

This week in 60 seconds

Top story

Digital twins are shrinking AMR commissioning from weeks to days

At NVIDIA GTC Berlin on October 21, KION said a fleet of autonomous vehicles is now running in daily operations at GXO's facility in Épinoy, France, after a pilot earlier in 2026. KION says on-site deployment time fell by more than 60%, because navigation and site behavior were trained and tested in an AI-powered digital twin first; it built the twin with Accenture on NVIDIA Omniverse. A day earlier, Toyota Material Handling Europe described the same approach with Nvidia and SoftServe, targeting up to 50% less commissioning effort and up to 40% faster time-to-market for autonomous material handling systems. Toyota says its twins are used to test edge cases, such as autonomous trucks sharing aisles with people and manually driven forklifts, before any hardware arrives on site, and that training its camera-based pallet detection on synthetic data (Nvidia Omniverse plus Cosmos) improved object-detection recall by more than 70% on real-world warehouse datasets.

❝

Why it matters: Commissioning is where many AMR and AGV business cases lose months, so a credible cut there shortens payback more than a faster robot would. Before you bank on it, ask vendors who builds and maintains the twin, how site changes flow back into it, and whether the gains hold for brownfield sites with mixed manual traffic. The figures above are company-reported, not independently audited.

Deployments & case studies

Industrial distribution · Japan – Geek+ PopPick goes live at MISUMI's second site – After the system roughly doubled productivity and storage efficiency in MISUMI's East Japan center, Geek+ has installed it at the new West Japan hub in Kawanishi, bringing the two sites to 149 robots, 15 stations and 801 shelves.

Automotive plant logistics · Germany & UK – Embotech and BMW pass 1 million automated vehicle moves – Finished cars drive themselves from end of line to parking and truck-loading areas at Dingolfing, Leipzig, Regensburg and MINI Plant Oxford: about 3,500 moves a day at more than 99.5% availability (company-reported). The system grew from a 2022 pilot, and a rollout at BMW Spartanburg is planned for next year.

Fulfillment · USA – HOJ Innovations swaps an overhead conveyor for AMRs at Hunter Douglas – In the Salt Lake City fulfillment center, HOJ removed a failure-prone overhead conveyor and commissioned and validated its AMR fleet (developed with SEER Robotics) over three days, with minimal production disruption, according to HOJ. A useful brownfield data point next to this week's top story, though no throughput figures were shared.

3PL · USA – GXO takes Agility's Digit humanoid to two more U.S. sites – Digit 4 deployments for e-commerce fulfillment in Statesville and Lebanon are expected to start in early 2027, after Digit moved more than 100,000 totes at GXO's Flowery Branch, Georgia site. Read it next to GXO CEO Patrick Kelleher's August comment that, after 45 humanoid pilots, the company has "not achieved ROI on humanoids yet." GXO did not disclose the size of the investment.

Retail logistics · Germany – ROSSMANN orders more KION robotic case pickers – KION delivered its Robotic Case Picker (RoCaP), an autonomous truck with camera scanning and a gripper arm, to a ROSSMANN regional warehouse this month, and the customer ordered more vehicles after the pilot.

Funding & M&A

  • Formic – $50M · Series B plus debt (Oct 22) – Led by Mercato Partners with debt from S2G Investments. The robots-as-a-service provider reports hundreds of robots across 100+ U.S. facilities.

  • Körber / NAiSE – Undisclosed · strategic stake (Oct 22) – Körber is taking a stake in the previously self-funded German software firm, whose vendor-agnostic fleet manager runs AGVs, AMRs and manual trucks from different makers on one control layer. NAiSE stays independent under its founders and keeps its AGV/AMR partner network.

  • FORT Robotics – ~$20M · new investor commitments (Oct 22) – Tiger Global leads a ~$10M financing with Mark Cuban Companies and adds $10M to the PIPE for FORT's planned Nasdaq listing via Newbury Street II. The robot-safety platform, used in warehousing among other sectors, reports 19,500+ units deployed.

  • Youibot Robotics – Up to 49.48M shares · Hong Kong IPO filing cleared (Oct 16) – China's securities regulator cleared the mobile-robot maker's listing plan. Youibot reported 2025 revenue of RMB 340M and a net loss of RMB 384M.

  • Symbotic / cellumation – Undisclosed · acquisition (Oct 13) – The Bremen maker of the celluveyor keeps its brand and founders and will sell to other integrators as well as feed Symbotic's systems.

New robots & product launches

Hikrobot Z1-300 / Z2-1500 – Payload 300 kg (underride) and 1,500 kg (fork) · onboard perception and decentralized coordination with no fleet server · 60 cm minimum aisle for the Z1 · route teaching by walking the path once (Z2). Hikrobot says a unit can go from unboxing to production in as little as 30 minutes; all figures are company-reported.

PROXAUT UNDER-X – Payload up to 1,500 kg · 96 × 42 cm footprint, 30–50 cm tall · LiDAR mapping with no magnets, tape or reflectors · swappable roller, platform or fork top modules. Unveiled at the first AGV Expo in Piacenza, Italy (Oct 22–24); PROXAUT also offers the navigation as a retrofit for existing AGV fleets.

Signode AMR portfolio – The packaging-equipment maker added lifting robots, pallet trucks, and counterbalanced, reach and stacker forklifts that navigate without fixed lines, aimed at moving pallets from end of line into storage. No payload or speed specs were published.

Intel + SAP EWM closed-loop proof of concept – Transport tasks created in SAP Extended Warehouse Management are dispatched to robots running Intel edge-AI hardware and software, and status and exceptions flow back into EWM. The companies cite shorter transport distances and less manual handling but published no figures; this is a demo, not a product release.

Number of the week

36% – Chinese suppliers' share of mobile robots deployed in the U.S. in 2025, up from 1% in 2018, according to Interact Analysis. That share now faces a new hurdle: since July 28, foreign-produced "advanced robotic devices" are on the FCC's Covered List, so new foreign-made models (from any country, not only China) generally need a Department of War Conditional Approval to get FCC equipment authorization. Interact reads logistics AMRs and AGVs as in scope; already-authorized models can still be sold and used. If you run U.S. sites, add authorization status and firmware-update pathways to vendor due diligence. Sources: Interact Analysis · FCC fact sheet
